With 380 million believers, Christianity is now one of the two most widely practiced religions in Africa. There has been tremendous growth in the number of Christians in Africa since 1900 consisting of 550,000 congregations. Much of the recent Christian growth in Africa is now due to African evangelism rather than European missionaries.
Despite the enormous growth, Africa is also home to much Christian persecution. For example, the government of the semi-autonomous island of Zanzibar is actively working to expel Christians. As part of this effort, all schools, even private Christian schools, are now required to teach Arabic and Islam. Moreover, the construction of new churches is prohibited and government authorities allow and even encourage Muslim citizens to intentionally drive out Christians. In 2013, 24 churches on the island were burned down. Pray for the Church in Zanzibar! There is great work to be done in Africa.
“Do good in Your good pleasure to Zion; build the walls of Jerusalem” (Psalm 51:18).
